Dark Sky Park Poloniny


The Dark Sky Park Poloniny was declared on 3 December 2010 at 12:00 in the Eurohotel Vihorlat in Snina under auspices of the Snina mayor Ing. Štefan Milovčík by a ceremonial signing of the Memorandum of Partnership Organizations:

  • Astronomical Institute of the Slovak Academy of Sciences

  • Administration of the National Park Poloniny

  • Slovak Association of Amateur Astronomers

  • Faculty of Science of the Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice

  • Slovak Astronomical Society at Slovak Academy of Sciences

  • Vihorlat Observatory in Humenné

The ceremonial act of declaration, briefing and ceremonial reception were all part of the conference of the project „Carpathian Skies – Development of tourism products based on astronomy in the region of Polish-Slovak borderland ”.

The Dark Sky Park Poloniny has been declared at the opportunity of the International Year of Biodiversity 2010 as the first dark sky area in Slovakia. It has been created with the aim to inform both the layman and professional public about extraordinarily preserved night area in this region, to educate about issues of the protection of the night environment and light pollution, to promote and protect the dark night skies that presents a basis for protection of the natural environment from light pollution. The Dark Sky Park will provide, apart from the protection of the night environment, also an information tourism program.
